Video coverage from the New York catwalks Designers showing in New York have taken an optimistic approach to next autumn/winter, splashing the runway with colour at the start of fashion week. In difficult economic climes, they're obviously hoping vibrant jewel palettes will give a lift to next season.

Diane von Furstenberg proposed funky knitware, based around cocoon-shaped coats and flowing sweater jackets, teemed with huge pompom hats in exuberant shades.

Her vision received rave reviews from the celebrity audience, including Heidi Klum, actress Julia Stiles and Diana Ross, whose signature tune Upside Down closed the show.

While the credit crunch led to Betsey Johnson showing behind closed doors at her store, the American talent has offered an indication of her ideas for next winter. At a charity fashion show, Tori Spelling wore a Betsey creation, gliding out in tiers of scarlet prom night ruffles.

The focus at DKNY was a strong, feminine silhouette much like that favoured by Michelle Obama. Watched by pop babe Hilary Duff, models sashayed out in below-the-knee pencil skirts and slim black turtleneck jumpers. Finishing off the look were elegant saucer-style hats in hot pink and emerald green.

Another exponent of ladylike dressing, Victoria Beckham, was also showing the second phase of her high-end line. Posh presented 23 perfectly tailored dresses to a highly select group of fashion editors.

Evening gowns shimmered with sequins, while daywear featured on-the-knee hemlines and cap sleeves, with neck to knee zips adding a hint of naughtiness.
