Modest Kate alters Goat coat to add length

All eyes were on the Duchess of Cambridge, née Kate Middleton, as she stepped out for an official engagement in Harlem on Monday sporting a £680 Goat coat. But astute fashionistas spotted an alteration to the chic black number. The modest royal had had a panel of fabric added to the hem of the coat in order to lengthen it, the Mail Online reports. Kate was visiting a local child development centre in Harlem during a thre-day tour of New York with her husband Prince William.

While the Duke had travelled to Washington to meet with President Barack Obama earlier on in the day, Kate had stayed behind to carry out her first solo engagement of the trip. It's not the first time Kate has tailored her clothing. On the Royal Tour of Australia and New Zealand back in April, she wore a £2,345 powder clue coat dress from Alexander McQueen. But the coat's peplum pocket detailing had been altered, as had the length.

Kate also altered a red Luisa Spagnoli suit earlier this year, adding a few extra inches of length to the red and black number. Later on in the day, the British royals got to meet some of America's pop royalty when they attended an NBA game in Brooklyn. The Duke and Duchess met Beyoncé Knowles, also known as Queen Bey, and her husband Jay Z at the basketball game.

The two couples shook hands upon meeting and were seen chatting amiably, William and Kateboth sporting huge smiles as they mingled with the pop star and rapper. William, second-in-line to the British throne, left his suit back at the Carlyle Hotel – having met with President Barack Obama at the White House the same day – opting for casual dress for the sporting event. He looked relaxed in a blue-and-red plaid shirt and trousers, while Kate mastered courtside chic in a grey coat by American designer Tory Burch, skinny jeans and heels.
