Nicole Kidman is in talks to play screen legend Ava Gardner in Martin Scorsese's next production, a biopic of the reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes.

According to press reports Martin met with Nicole recently to discuss the forthcoming production, which is due to start filming in June. If she agrees to take the role, she will star alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, who has already been confirmed for the lead.

Howard Hughes became famous during the war years for both his eccentricity and his relationships with Hollywood stars, who also included Katherine Hepburn and Rita Hayworth. The film is to be titled The Aviator, in recognition of his noted achievements as a pilot.

Nicole will be seeing a lot of Leonardo in the coming months, as she is also set to star alongside him in the film Alexander The Great, charting the life and conquests of the legendary Macedonian king.

For the moment, however, she'll be thinking only of next Sunday's Golden Globes ceremony, where she is tipped to pick up the best actress gong for her portrayal of Virginia Woolf in The Hours. Scorsese will meanwhile be hoping to get a nod for best director when the Oscar nominations are announced next month. Amazingly, the legendary filmmaker has never received an Academy Award.
