Daredevil star Jennifer Garner and her actor husband Scott Foley have "mutually decided to separate", a publicist for the couple confirmed on Tuesday.

The Alias beauty met Scott on the set of his hit US series Felicity in 1998, and two years later the little-known actress and her TV star beau tied the knot.

Insiders speculate that Jennifer's busy career may have taken its toll on the marriage. While Scott's show Felicity came to an end last year – and his career has apparently wound down as well – his wife has been on a hot streak, finding both TV and big-screen successes.

Earlier this year, the actress acknowledged that balancing her work and home life was an "interesting way to be a newlywed". "But so far, so good," she added. "Scott is my biggest support, I'm his biggest fan… He is definitely my first priority outside of what I need to do for my job."

Rumours that trouble was brewing in the union were sparked after the two began appearing separately at high-profile events, with Jennifer hitting the red carpet solo at the Oscars last month.
