With his Best Picture Oscar in the bag it was finally time for Argo director Ben Affleck to shave off his lucky beard. "He did it to mark the end of a chapter," said a source. "It had a ceremonial quality to it." On Thursday the Oscar winner stepped out looking clean shaven for the first time since the awards ceremony.
His actress wife Jennifer Garner and their children Violet, seven, Seraphina, four and 11-month-old Samuel were pleased to see the beard go. "My wife is a very polite and kind woman," said Ben. "She and the kids did not like the beard. It has an exposed wire vibe. It was hated in my home." Ben shaved the beard off with clippers at a private Oscars afterparty in a restaurant. Jennifer was so keen to see him shave that she "actually brought the clippers to the party," according to a source.
Ben had kept the beard after deciding it was his lucky charm. His espionage thriller Argo, in which he also stars, has won a clutch of awards, including Best Motion Picture at the Golden Globes, Best Film at the BAFTA Awards Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. His win at the 85th Academy Awards comes after controversy that he was not nominated in the Best Director category.
