Smash ITV drama Broadchurch has received three nods, including one in a new category honoring the best TV detective.

Both its stars, Olivia Coleman and David Tennant, are up for the prize, pitted against Idris Elba for Luther, Bradley Walsh for Law and Order UK, Suranne Jones for Scott and Bailey and Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch.

Despite no new episodes of Sherlock being broadcast during the qualifying period, it was decided that Benedict should be included in the shortlist given the popularity of repeats with viewers, show bosses have said.

Broadchurch, one of the biggest hits of 2013, is also nominated in the drama category, alongside Doctor Who, Call The Midwife and last year's winner Downton Abbey.

Nominees in the drama performance category are Downton's Maggie Smith, Miranda Hart for Call the Midwife, Doc Martin's Martin Clunes the recently departed Doctor Who, Matt Smith.

Ant and Dec are nominated for the best entertainment presenter, an award they have won for the past 12 years. This year they will face competition from X Factor host Dermot O'Leary, Alan Carr, Graham Norton and Keith Lemon.

Meanwhile, the X Factor will compete against Strictly Come Dancing, Britain's Got Talent - also hosted by Ant and Dec - Dancing on Ice and The Voice in the talent show category.

The battle of the soaps will see EastEnders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks compete for the prize.

The National Television Awards, hosted by Dermot O'Leary, will take place on 22 January.
