Medical mockumentary compared to The Office – and it has near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score

The Office defined mockumentaries for an entire TV generation, but St Denis Medical, which aired its second season on the BBC last month, is coming for that crown

Many of us solely watch TV to escape from the realities of the world, so high-stakes medical dramas like The Pitt or Casualty mean that that drama is off the books.

However, for those who still crave some hospital magic there is one offering on the BBC, that being St Denis Medical. The series, which is produced by American network NBC, can be streamed on the iPlayer, with the show's second season dropping last month. A third season of the hit mockumentary is in production.

The show follows the staff at an underfunded hospital in Oregon, with the first season's synopsis reading: "At St. Denis Regional Medical Center, the dedicated doctors and nurses are trying their best to treat patients while maintaining their own sanity."

Like many American shows, there are plenty of episodes to dig in to, with both seasons having 18 parts. So, while it's unlikely that you'll be bingeing the season in one evening, if you're looking for something longer to settle down with next, the show proves to be the ideal candidate.

What did fans make of St Denis Medical?

The American series has attracted dozens of fans since it first aired, with many comparing it to The Office, the iconic American sitcom that made Steve Carrell a household name and has since been named one of the greatest TV shows of all-time.

St Denis Medical has a 90% approval from fans on Rotten Tomatoes, with one saying: "This show is just easy and enjoyable fun! Nice to have a simple comedy with actually funny jokes, no major social overtones, and where entertainment is the priority! Looking forward to future seasons!"

Fans have compared the comedy to The Office

A second posted: "St Denis Medical is entering The Office/Parks and Rec tier to me. Season 2 has been extremely good and the latest episode the best one yet," while a third added: "Laugh out loud. Amazing writing, acting, and directing. The characters are so special. PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL!"

Writing for The A.V. Club, Brian Tallerico was glowing about the show's second season, penning: "While the current state of things could have allowed the writers of SDM to lean into social statements a bit more than they do in the eight episodes sent to critics for review, they're still full of increasingly sharp writing and effectively funny performances. St. Denis Medical doesn't break the mold of the network workplace sitcom as much as remind you why it was a TV staple."
