Now that spooky season is officially upon us, there's no better time to get tucked up under a blanket and spend the day on the sofa watching a gripping new thriller – and Netflix's latest release is bound to have you hooked.

The terrifying six-part series, Below, stars Josh Hartnett (Verity) as a Newfoundland fisherman and single father of three who fights to protect his family when a violent sea creature begins terrorising the town.

Set in a remote village, the series follows Calvin Penney, a "big‑hearted but stubborn fisherman" who is still traumatised by his father's mysterious death from decades ago.

The synopsis continues: "Determined to keep his son Wade (Charlie Heaton) and the rest of his family safe, he teams up with a visiting marine researcher (Mackenzie Davis) to confront the creature and reveal the island's buried secrets before it's too late. Blending local myth, thrilling suspense, and heartfelt humor, this twisty six-part limited series dives into themes of family, community, and change — both terrifying and inevitable."

What have viewers and critics said about Below? 

Audiences wasted no time getting stuck into the six-part series, with many binge-watching the thriller in just one day. 

Taking to social media, one person wrote: "I watched the whole series in one day," while another said they were "hooked".

Others compared the series to Apple TV's Emmy-winning supernatural comedy-horror, Widow's Bay.

The thriller received an equally positive response from critics. The Telegraph awarded four stars, praising its "eerie atmosphere" that delivered "genuine chills," while Variety lauded the show as a "captivating ride blending horror and suspense".

Josh Hartnett, famed for his roles in Trap and Pearl Harbour, leads the cast as Calvin Penney. 

He stars alongside Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things), who plays Wade Penney, and Mackenzie Davis (Speak No Evil), who stars as Fonda Howander.
