Ahh, the classic black suit. A jacket and trouser separates provide endless possibilities to create different outfits depending on the mood –  the trousers with a white tee, the blazer thrown over a dress or paired with jeans. You name it.

But how does one possibly make a supposedly plain black suit (wearing both elements together) look elegant yet casual, without an incredible amount of jewellery? No lace bodice or white t-shirt underneath, not a heeled shoe insight... Insert Elizabeth Debicki.

The 32-year-old who plays Princess Diana in Netflix’s The Crown, showed us how to make a simple black suit look effortlessly elegant at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) nomination event last night in New York City. She wore a cropped length, black double breasted blazer and black trousers. Pairing tailored trousers with crisp white trainers is a partnership that has become synonymous with a smart-casual look for celebrities, influencers and, well… every person who has ever scrolled down their Instagram feed. But to keep her stance between classy and casual, Debicki opted for black trainers instead. Accessories were kept to a minimum, accentuating the low neckline of the look. She broke the black up slightly with a dainty gold belt.

She also wore her hair straight with a slight bend, tucked behind her ear on one side – creating an elegant transition from her eye line, all the way down to the plunging neckline.

Princess Diana was a fan of masculine tailoring

Though maybe not a look as intentionally reminiscent of Princess Diana as Elizabeth’s other outfits worn prior, the royal fashion icon did in fact love to wear a power pant-suit. She wore them in all colours from camel to black to grey, and switched up the base layer depending on the occasion.

The Australian actress is often spotted at events wearing outfits that pay homage to her royal character, including the premiere event for The Crown in November. She wore a stunning black ball gown from Dior, with a draped neckline that replicated a similar baby blue, Catherine Walker number worn by the late Princess of Wales at the Cannes Film Festival in 1987.
