Is there anything more quintessentially Christmassy than a novelty jumper? Forget festive feel-good films, draughty carol concerts and spiced mulled wines, the statement knit is the holiday period in sartorial form.

Characteristically garish, Christmas jumpers are intrinsically part of the festive season and ought to be endured with good grace à la Bridget Jones and Mark Darcy at Aunt Una's turkey curry party?

Perhaps, but we've had enough. Our yuletide novelty threshold was exceeded within the first week of December, and so when it comes to our Christmas jumper this year, we're going categorically chic or else.

How to style a Christmas jumper

For a low-key festive style moment, we love pairing chunky knits with classic blue jeans or with a full colour-blocking ensemble and a pair of comfy loafers.

Whereas if a more dressy occasion is on the cards, we adore a bold red micro skirt and sleek leather boots, or a sparkling sequin maxi skirt and over-the-top statement earrings.

Hello! Fashion shares how to wear a Christmas jumper and still look categorically chic:

Look 1 - Sultry statement

Nothing screams a sultry statement quite like a mini skirt and knee-high boots. I love the idea of pairing the textured sequin skirt with an oversized knit like this. Top off the colour coordination with a French-girl-approved beret for maximum festive cheer.

Naomi Sequin Micro Skirt, £140.00, Wolf & Badger; Jacquard-knit jumper, £27.99, H&M; Kramer Buckle High Heeled Knee Boots, £79.99, OFFICE; Double G Earrings With Black Crystals, £305.00, Gucci; Red Wool Rib Knit Beret. £55.00, Ganni.

Look 2 - Low-key polish

Keeping things casual over the holiday break but still wanting to look like you've put in a sprinkle of effort? Pairing classic blue jeans with a bold statement earring is the ultimate recipe for a low-key polished ensemble.

LOVE knit jumper, £239.20, Sandro; Straight fit jeans, £29.99, Stradivarius; Gema stud earrings, £42.00, Swarovski; Miu Miu Ballet Flats, £700.00, Matches.

Look 3 - Effortless off-duty

We know that this dreamy Dior jumper doesn't quite fit the traditional Christmas jumper bill, but putting that aside I think we can all agree that this cosy cashmere knit boasts big snuggly season energy. Pairing a tonal creme outfit with accents of patent black just screams effortless elegance.

Cashmere Knit, £1,700.00, Dior; Beck Tailored Jean, £95.00, Jigsaw; Accent Loafers, £75.00, Charles & Keith; Ribbed Wool Blend Beanie. £35.00, & Other Stories; Mini Leather Le Bambino, £535.00, Harrods.

Look 4 - Retro glam

Whether it's Christmas or not, we love a bold text jumper and this River Island number is so good it will be hard to restrict it to just December wearing. Retro glam will forever and always be in style and a pair of knee-high white boots and a red headband is the ultimate ode.

Red Christmas Jumper, £35.00, River Island; French Connection Azzurra Tweed Mini Skirt, £38.50, John Lewis; Heeled Boots, £59.99, Stradivarius; Velvet Headband, £223.00, Farfetch.

Look 5 - Party perfection

Sequins scream party season so why not go all out and wear them on your skirt and shoes? Christmas is meant to be fun and this red lips clutch is exactly that.

Grey Jingle Slogan Knitted Jumper, £20.00, Asda; Sequin Flared Hem Maxi Skirt, £79.20, Karen Millen; Evelyn-R Pump Red, £150.00, Steve Madden; Lips Clutch Bag, £158.00, Lulu Guinness; Axel Glass & China Stone Cluster Earrings, £18.00, Oliver Bonas.
