Short hair, don’t care? That’s exactly how I feel when I wake up in the morning, ever since I went under the scissors and chopped my waist-length locks into an above-the-shoulder bob.
What made me make the move to shorter hair, you ask? Equal parts influence from the It-Girls, financial security (you won’t believe how little conditioner I need now) and wanting to see what all the fuss is about.
Bob haircuts continue to reign supreme amongst those most notable, just this week, both Margot Robbie and Zendaya stepped out at Paris Fashion Week sporting new ’dos.
Spotted at the Chanel show, Wuthering Heights’ leading lady debuted her fresh blonde cut on the FROW. Opting for a sleek, straight across bob worn out in a tousled, wavy style, Margot oozed beach girl energy. Trading out her long Disney princess locks wasn’t the only style switch-up on the cards for the Australian actress; Margot also showed off her new French girl-approved choppy bangs.
As for Zendaya, the rumoured newlywed swanned into the Louis Vuitton show wearing all white, but all eyes were of course on new micro bob. Letting her natural curls shine, the Euphoria actress styled her ultra-short hair in a side part with one side tucked behind her ear and the other left to frame her facecard. If you know Queen Z, then you’ll know she changes her hair just about as frequently as she does her knickers, but this style is the shortest she’s sported since her 2015 pixie cut days.
Both Margot and Zendaya join a long, long list of other A-List It-Girls who are currently rocking shorter tresses. Hailey Bieber, Lily Collins, Gracie Abrams, Jessie Buckley and Ayo Edebiri all consider themselves members of the bob club, many switching between long lobs and striking pixie hybrids.
If you’ve ever considered a walk on the shorter side, I took the plunge a few years back and haven’t looked back.
The benefits of a bob
Time Sensitive
As someone who had long hair their whole life, I desperately wanted both a dramatic change and a style which would hold its own. I find that having less hair means that styling takes half the time, and my time spent under the blow dryer has been cut in half.
Summer Heat
With warmer weather on the horizon, shorter hair is perfect for sweltering days in the city and abroad. Instead of feeling like I’m wearing a merino knit snood, my neck is now open to feeling a beachy breeze, resulting in both a healthy core body temperature and minimal overstimulation levels.
Easy to Style
Nine times out of ten, I can’t be bothered, and that's just a fact. Whether it's walking the 5 minutes to the offy to get milk for my tea or waking up early to steam my trousers, I would prefer to be crinkly and wince with every sip. Thus, short hair has been a game-changer as it looks good with hats, caps, beanies and scarves when a bad hair day calls, while clips and hairpins are perfect for adding an accessorised touch.
It Just Looks Good With Everything
As a Style Editor who likes to wear her personality on her sleeve (literally), I was concerned that shorter hair might be hard to wear with my wardrobe, but I was proved wrong. I find that straightening it sleekly looks great with gilded gowns for lavish occasions, flicking up the bottom to look like a Lego head - my preferred option is a fun and cute way to spice up a simple ensemble, and playing with curls and waves can complete a loud look.
In conclusion, I will now be using my lunch break to book in for a fresh summer-fuelled chop because there truly is no better feeling.
