Earlier on Monday my colleague Melanie reported that Prince Harry is hoping his father, King Charles, will be by his side at the Invictus Games in Birmingham this year. Prima facie, this seems somewhat optimistic given their recent meetings have been restricted to a few minutes behind closed closed doors.
Probability aside, though, should the King attend his son's military games? Mere mention of the name "Harry" tends to see commenters get hotter under the collar than Al Pacino in the closing scenes of Scarface so I imagine the majority will be in the "no" camp. But looking at the situation from a more dispassionate viewpoint, is the Invictus Games an event worthy of the King's attendance? With its message of hope and happiness post conflict, I would argue that it is. The King is the ceremonial head of our Armed Forces so I believe it is incumbent on him to be there, regardless of the tense familial backdrop.
