After resuming her public duties last month, Norway's Queen Sonja has made her first official trip abroad since her husband King Harald's death.

The royal, 89, travelled to Málaga, Spain during the week where she delivered a poignant speech for an exhibition opening and visited a local school.

In photos shared by the Royal House on Instagram, Sonja dressed vibrantly for her visit to the Norwegian School Málaga in Arroyo de la Miel, wearing a bright coral-pink trouser suit with a colourful patterned scarf and statement jewellery. A red carpet was rolled out for her arrival as students warmly greeted the royal at the school gates with bunches of flowers.

A day earlier, the royal attended the opening of the Munch-Picasso exhibition at the Picasso Museum on 29 October where she shared condolences following the recent tragic train crash in Toledo, which claimed at least 69 lives.

"Allow me, first of all, to say that I was deeply saddened to learn of the terrible train accident that took place yesterday near Toledo," the royal said, as reported by HELLO!'s sister publication, HOLA!.

Queen Sonja returns to work

Queen Sonja has been mourning the death of her husband King Harald, who passed away on 28 August at the age of 89 after being hospitalised for a rare blood condition called haemolytic anaemia.

The Norwegian royals gathered on 9 September to say a final goodbye to the late monarch with a poignant state funeral held at the Oslo Cathedral.

One month after the service, Sonja returned to her public duties when she visited the National Archives at Sognsvann in Oslo.

"Here, she was shown how condolences, letters, children's drawings, and other tokens of remembrance following King Harald's passing are being collected and preserved for posterity," the Royal Palace captioned photos from the outing last month.
