The tiny principality that became an A-list destination with the marriage of Prince Rainier and Hollywood star Grace Kelly in the Fifties has continued to draw the crème de la crème of the social world. So what attracts the stars to the seaside paradise? The gorgeous location, Monaco's ultra-glam royal family and, of course, an inimitable lineup of high-profile events.
One weekend during June's Monaco Gran Prix in 2003, a number of glitzy celebs jetted into the Mediterranean hotspot including Heidi Klum, Elle Macpherson, boy band Blue, 'It' girl Tara Palmer-Tomkinson and Naomi Campbell. Two of the world's hottest young royals, photogenic siblings Andrea and Charlotte Casiraghi, added their own brand of glam, making an appearance at the winner's podium as grandfather Prince Rainier handed out the trophies.
The springtime Laureus World Sports Awards allows top athletes such as tennis star Serena Williams and marathon champ Paula Radcliffe to show off their glitzier sides. Meanwhile, the two-day gala event also gives some of the world's most glamorous stars – including past guests Kylie Minogue, Rod Stewart, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones – an opportunity to pay tribute to the world of sports.
Year after year, international high society joins the Monegasque royal family at the annual Rose Ball, held in late winter. The glittering event – hosted by Princess Caroline in a rose-bedecked ballroom at the famous Monte Carlo Sporting Club – attracts jet-setters, aristocrats and millionaires from all over Europe and the US. Guests are more than happy to pay over 700 euros for the privilege of attending the occasion, which raises funds for the Princess Grace Foundation.
