Indiana Jones' Welsh adventure

Harrison Ford and his girlfriend Calista Flockhart have traded the excitement of Hollywood for the rustic charms of North Wales. The glamorous couple have been taking a break on the canals of Shropshire in a narrowboat.

The two performers, who were accompanied by Calista's three-year-old son Liam, were even spotted stocking up on bread and milk at a village supermarket. Local people were surprised to see the Tinseltown pair steering their vessel through locks and aquaducts on the Shropshire Union canal. But it seems Harrison and Calista wanted to try something a bit different from the usual celebrity hotspots.

After jetting in to a private airstrip, they hired the barge from local rental company Mastermyn Ltd. "Mr Ford said he'd been on a similar boat 30 years previously on the Oxford Canal," revealed the firm's boss Colin Hill. "There was only one problem when the rope got caught around the propeller, but Mr Ford said he managed to free it himself."

Perhaps the only hiccup on the couple's Welsh adventure was the unpredictable British weather. The Indiana Jones star and his svelte partner decided to take refuge in the Bryn Howel Hotel for the last few nights of their stay, when the wind got a little too strong. "Harrison is a very gentle man, very handsome and talks with respect," said manager Ashraf Elsergany. "He was not arrogant at all and was down on the floor playing with his son."

Staff at the hotel also scotched rumours the Ally McBeal actress does not eat properly. "She had hash browns, scrambled eggs and a sausage for breakfast," revealed Ashraf. "She was always exercising in the morning and she was doing yoga when we opened the restaurant at 6.30am."
