Kelly Ripa is a devoted mother to her three children – Michael, Lola, and Joaquin – but that doesn't mean she doesn’t value her alone time, especially on a day dedicated to her most important role.
During the May 8 instalment of LIVE, Kelly and Mark Consuelos dedicated the episode to Mother's Day. The ABC star recalled getting COVID 19 just one day before Mother's Day after telling her kids she wanted to spend the holiday alone.
"You remember when I got COVID on Mother’s Day like four years ago?" Kelly asked her husband. "The kids were saying, 'What do you want for Mother’s Day?' and I jokingly said, 'I wanna be left completely alone.'"
Kelly continued: "And then I got COVID the day before Mother’s Day and I was totally alone. And I was like, 'This was not what I had in mind.' However, it was a lot of solitude."
The ABC host went on to share her Mother's Day plans for this year. "This year I’m going to be on an airplane for Mother's Day, so I will once again be in solitude," she said. "Well, not in solitude. I’ll be with 300 other people, but none of them will be asking me to make them breakfast. So that will be nice."
Keeping with the topic of Mother's Day, the couple then discussed why kids should call their mothers instead of texting them on the special weekend. "Key reasons why you should call your mom – well, because it’s the right thing to do," shared Mark. "Speaking beats texting. So don’t just text."
"When the girls messaged their moms, the salivary cortisol levels were similar to those who did not communicate with their moms at all," Mark added. "Hearing your mom’s voice has a uniquely soothing effect, so the next time you are stressed out by schoolwork, family or friends, call your mother."
Kelly then admitted that moms actually enjoy a break from their family on Mother's Day. "People are in disbelief about how many mothers dream – literally daydream – about being hospitalized for Mother’s Day," she explained. "Just for the peace and quiet. To have a simple day of hospitalization."
LIVE's executive producer Michael Gelman teased the special episode dedicated to moms ahead of its airing. "Just like people do Christmas credits, which we always have a lot of fun with, we do a special Mother’s Day credits, where everyone sends in photos," he told Decider. "So they get to be a part of honoring their moms and be seen and be heard on the show, which is always nice. Our show has always been very family[-oriented], very mom-oriented."
