It has officially been a little over five months since Nancy Guthrie's disappearance from her home in Tucson, Arizona.

The 84-year-old mother of NBC anchor Savannah Guthrie was believed to have been taken from her home in the wee hours of February 1, 2026, shortly after she was dropped off by her daughter Annie and her husband Tommaso.

The FBI and the local Pima County Sheriff's Department have since joined forces in the investigation into her disappearance, which has hit multiple starts and stops over its five months.

Savannah Guthrie's latest statement on Nancy Guthrie

Sharing a statement with KOLD 13 News on July 1, Savannah, 54, said on her family's behalf: "It is five months of agony and unending trauma for our family. There is not a moment that goes by that we aren't actively trying to find our mom."

She continued: "We thank the people of Tucson for holding her in their hearts, as well as both the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff's Office for their tireless work on behalf of our family. Bring her home."

Her response to the ransom notes

Over the past two weeks, an influx of ransom notes were also being sent out to media organizations, some claiming that Nancy had died in captivity, others claiming to know the identity of at least one of the kidnappers.

The FBI and the Pima County Sheriff's Department have since questioned the authenticity of the notes, maintaining that several of them are possibly fakes, although they continue to investigate their legitimacy.

After the first of the notes, which claimed Nancy's death, was released, the story was shared on NBC's TODAY, and Savannah herself reacted to it on air. I don't have any comment on this story and I'm not involved in our coverage, but I can't pretend I'm not here and so since I am, I wanted to just take that opportunity to ask people to come forward."

"Someone knows something," she added. "And this story today is a news story on your radar but this is the life my sister lives, that I live, that my brother lives, that our extended families live, that our children live, every day."

"And we are in agony. We cannot be in peace, however much I try to come out here every day, and I will find that joy, I promise I will. But we need your help. We are begging for your help and I'm not going to miss that opportunity."

The FBI, Sheriff respond to the ransom notes

In a statement to KOLD 13, the FBI branch in Phoenix added: "The FBI and its task force partners have received several ransom notes over the course of this investigation. Some have been deemed to be extortion attempts without legitimacy. Other ransom demands may potentially be legitimate and are still being investigated as such."

Sheriff Chris Nanos also stated: "I guess there's something out now that says the FBI or the sheriff dismissed notes – that is not the truth. What we know is we have a number of notes that we are going to continue to investigate."
