She may have presented a brazen persona in the past, but when it comes to details of her personal life, Madonna is little short of a shrinking violet.

The fact that she rarely gives permission for anyone to dig into her past – Diana biographer Andrew Morton was dismissed as a “snivelling little worm” after the singer discovered he was being paid half a million pounds to write a book on her – makes the 42-year-old pop diva’s decision to work with the BBC on an in-depth biography even more unusual.

The hour-long programme, entitled I Love Madonna, will chart the Anglophile singer’s influence on style and her role in the girl-power phenomenon. In a virtually unprecedented move, the singer/actress, who is married to British film director Guy Ritchie, has agreed to give the Beeb access to family and friends.

I Love Madonnawill be aired on BBC1 in a prime-time slot on July 4 – American Independence Day. Meanwhile her new tour, Drowned, the first in eight years, kicks off on June 9 in Barcelona.
