English rugby star Jonny Wilkinson may soon be leaving Britain, if American Football executives get their way. NFL scouts watched the rugby maestro help England win the World Cup in Australia, and now they're hoping to lure him away to the US.

"If Jonny agrees, we'll pull out all the stops," revealed NFL Europe spokesman David Tossell. "Jonny has a calm head under extreme pressure, as he showed in the World Cup final. Huge teams want that and they will fight for him as they don't want to miss out."

The athlete, who scored the winning drop goal in England's World Cup final clash against Australia, is being courted for his ability to kick with pinpoint accuracy. His teammate Martin Johnsson was asked to set up a meeting with NFL bosses and the San Diego Chargers sent a talent scout to the final in Sydney. Apparently he could earn around £3 million as an NFL kicker.

Jonny, meanwhile, has refused to rule out a move to the US, and clubs there would still welcome him when his rugby career comes to an end. "It wouldn't matter if he came forward now or in 10 years," said Mr Tossel. "Kickers can play until they're 40."
