British TV icons stage a comeback

British audiences can look forward to a reunion with some of their favourite TV characters, because several of their best-loved personalities are returning to the small screen.

Fans of the BBC soap EastEnders will be delighted to hear that Peggy Mitchell is about to return to Albert Square. Actress Barbara Windsor, who has been on sick leave for 16 months after contracting the Epstein-Barr virus, is on her way back to Walford. "I'm a lot better now," said the diminutive 66-year-old. "I'm going back on Tuesday for a couple of episodes and I'm looking forward to it."

Over on ITV meanwhile, programming bosses are planning to revive the detective series Inspector Morse. Two-and-a-half years after the death of John Thaw, who played the title role, the station is in talks with co-star Kevin Whately to bring back the popular drama.

The comedy Rumpole Of The Bailey is also set for a comeback, with renowned character actor Albert Finney in the lead role. The exploits of Rumpole, an idiosyncratic London barrister, first found popularity back in the Eighties.

And Sean Bean is likewise being lined up to reprise his role as a maverick British officer who rises through the ranks of Wellington's army in the Nineties' series Sharpe. After his big screen success in the movies Troy and Lord Of The Rings, the Newcastle-born actor is set to return to the show that helped make him a star.
