The night belonged to the Daleks as Dr Who bagged three prizes at the National TV Awards. Watched by the cream of British telly, a delighted Billie Piper stepped on stage to take best actress for the BBC sci-fi series. The fresh-faced star was amazed at her triumph. "Soap stars win everything," she said. "I didn't think I had a sniff." Co-star Christopher Eccleston scooped best actor for his portrayal of the Timelord in the BBC hit, which saw off competition from US ratings-winner Desperate Housewives to be named most popular drama.

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver picked up two gongs for his crusading show Jamie's School Dinners. The star, accompanied by wife Jools, was still nursing a black eye from falling down the stairs of his restaurant.

Meanwhile Wayne Rooney's fiancée Colleen McLouglin proved you don't need any silverware to make a big impression. Stunning in vintage couture, the pretty celeb had set off her LBD with £1 million pounds worth of Chopard jewellry.

EastEnders veteran Barbara Windsor, wearing a chiffon floral affair, was one of the few ladies to avoid black. The star's megawatt smile may have seemed brighter than usual after the return of her character's on-screen sons, Ross Kemp and Steve McFadden on the show. Around 13 million viewers tuned in on Monday night to see Grant utter his famous "'Ello Mum" greeting.

Ant and Dec also had a lot to smile at after being named most popular entertainment presenters for the fifth year in a row, taking their total haul of trophies to eight, beating Michael Barrymore's record.
