TV Kate's baby joy after surprise pregnancy

Breakfast TV star Kate Garraway, 37, was overjoyed last night after welcoming a baby daughter into the world. Kate and her husband, former Labour spin doctor, Derek Draper - who wed last September after a whirlwind courtship - released a statement saying: "We are both incredibly thrilled and feel very blessed.

The first-time mum and her bundle of joy, named Darcey, were said to be "doing well". The 8lb 3oz girl made her grand debut in a London hospital on Friday at 8.17am.

The GMTV presenter was forced to issue an apology after being snapped smoking days after starting maternity leave. "I let myself and everyone down. I am so sorry," said the TV personality, adding that she'd resisted temptation up until then.

Kate only discovered she was expecting during a kidney scan after an operation to remove a tumour. Feeling tired and ill she went to hospital fearing the worst, but came out delighted. "It was quite nice to find that rather than having a growth on my kidney, I had a baby. Not a bad bargain," she recalled.

Russell Crowe also has reason to feel pleased with life when he announced this weekend that the latest addition to his family will be a boy. After confirming at the start of the year that he and wife Danielle Spencer were expecting a second child, the Australian actor revealed the sex of the baby to chat show host Jay Leno.

The couple's two-year-old son, Charlie is taking a little while to get used to the news, and has mooted the names Pumpkinhead and Stinky for his unborn sibling.
