Kevin ready to 'go the distance' in Britney divorce

Kevin Federline has responded to his estranged wife Britney Spears' divorce petition by filing his own legal papers demanding spousal support and custody of their two children. The move came just a day after the pop diva lodged her documents - which likewise requested sole custody of one-year-old Sean Preston and baby Jayden James - with the Los Angeles Superior Court.

The couple's break-up looks set to develop into a protracted battle, as Kevin is also seeking financial support. Lawyers representing the father of four say he is willing to "go the distance" in order to win a fair settlement.

"The pleading is responsive to the petition hurriedly filed by Britney Spears yesterday, which may have been a preemptive strike in anticipation by her of the filing by Kevin seeking sole custody of the children," explained attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan. "Kevin is prepared to go the distance in order to do what he feels is necessary to protect and safeguard the children and will not be intimidated or dissuaded from pursuit of those goals."

Los Angeles' courts will also be reviewing documents filed by Oscar-winner Reese Witherspoon in the days ahead. The Walk The Line star, who split from husband Ryan Phillippe last week, has likewise filed divorce papers requesting custody of their two children.
