After Spanish film stars and lovebirds Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem stepped out together at this year's Oscars and Goya Awards, celebrity spotters must have been wondering if they would make yet another public appearance on Monday evening, this time at the Cannes Film Festival.

In the end, Javier walked the star-studded red carpet for his latest film, Biutiful, without his gorgeous girlfriend by his side.

The actor seemed perfectly happy though, posing for photos with his co-stars and sharing laughs with the drama's director, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu, of Babel fame.

Perhaps his relaxed mood was because he knew he had his lady love there to support him. He was later spotted leaving the screening with Penelope, who was stunning in an elegant black gown. The actress seemingly didn't want to steal the limelight from her boyfriend.

Javier has generated a lot of buzz with his powerful performance in Biutiful, playing a father working in illegal trade who is diagnosed with cancer.

The Oscar-winner, who said the role was "very rewarding", has won a great deal of praise, especially from his director.

"Only somebody like Javier could be doing that," Alejandro said referring to his emotionally intense performance.

Also on hand for the screening were Naomi Watts, Naomi Campbell and jury member Kate Beckinsale, who continued her rule on the red carpet in a gorgeous black Balmain gown that showed off her pins with a high slit.
