New York-born Lana confirmed the end of her three-year relationship earlier this week, in an interview with Switzerland's 20 Minuten newspaper.

"We are currently not together," she said of the Scottish musician, who now performs under the name Nightmare Boy. "He is a wonderful person. But there are some things with which he has to deal. I will not explain it in detail.

"This was hard on our relationship, I no longer felt free. We'll see how it goes."

Her comments came just a fortnight after Lana said of their romance, "We have a difficult road. He's a very dark character.

"He has months on end where it's a really dark stretch of writing and waiting. He has his total own world."

Lana is having a difficult time of late. This week she came under fire for recent comments she made to the Guardian.

The singer – real name Elizabeth Woolridge Grant - was quoted as saying she saw glamour in an early death. "I wish I was dead already," she said. "I do! I don't want to have to keep doing this. But I am."

Lana took to Twitter to complain about the "sinister" interviewer Tim Jonze for asking leading questions – he later posted audio from the interview to defend his article, and Lana's tweets were deleted.

Among those to criticise Lana for her comments was Kurt Cobain's daughter Frances Bean.

Frances, whose father killed himself at the age of 27 in 1994 when she was just eighteen months, has encouraged the singer to "embrace life" in a series of tweets.
