Lourdes Leon enrols at mum Madonna's university

26 JUNE 2014

Lourdes Leon is following in her mother's footsteps. Madonna's teenage daughter has enrolled as a college freshman at the University of Michigan – just like the queen on pop did almost 40 years ago.

Lourdes, 17, will be studying musical theatre and dance as she works towards her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the Ann Arbor institution.

Madonna, 55, briefly attended the university in the seventies before leaving for New York to pursue her music career.

This week, she proudly posted an Instagramphotograph from outside the campus' shop, with the caption, "I think I'll stop in here!"

It was the mother and daughter's second trip to the university; they toured the facility together back in November.

Madonna has made no secret of the fact that she hoped her eldest child with follow her path to UM.

"I keep telling her Ann Arbor is an awesome place," the singer told the NFL Network before her Super Bowl performance in 2012.

This week, Lourdes graduated from her high school – Manhattan's prestigious La Guardia Performing Arts School. She recently reflected on her time there as a student in a blog post written for the Material Girl fashion website.

Writing about "how happy and slightly saddened I am that my High School years are now coming to an end," Lourdes said, "It's weird because so much more lies ahead – yet it feels almost empty to wrap up high school."

She added, "Of course I'll miss the friends that I've made and the family that makes up the drama department, but it's really beautiful to be able to see all of the people I dearly love and care for, people that I grew up with for four years, go on and pursue their passions, whatever they may be, and find their place."

The stylish teenager also brought up some of her questionable fashion choices as she reflected on her time at school.

"Oh how I wish I could go back in time and urge my 14 year old self NOT to wear black rhinestone studded t-shirts with bloody skulls on them, purchased from really 'hip' stores," she wrote.

"I like to reassure myself though, that I had to go through that awkward time of 'trying stuff out' to figure out what I like wearing best. I still don't think I have a defined style, maybe because I don't want to limit myself to what I should wear.

"Makes me happy knowing that I went to an arts school where any kind of style could fly: it gave me the confidence and the yolo (you only live once) spirit I needed to successfully look like a clown (it’s fine)."
