Melanie Griffith has begun the process of permanently removing her "Antonio" tattoo. The 56-year-old actress, who last month announced that she and Antonio Banderas were filing for divorce after 18 years of marriage, was spotted visiting a skin clinic in West Hollywood. Melanie has previously used make-up to cover up the heart-shaped inking – which bears her estranged husband's name – on her right arm.

On Monday, the Golden Globe winner was seen leaving the clinic with a large patch of white gauze taped over the tattoo. It is not yet clear how many laser removal treatments Melanie has had, but the procedure usually involves between three and 20 sessions, according to professionals. Appointments are also normally scheduled four to eight weeks apart to allow the skin to heal and to reduce scarring. The blonde pin-up and her former actor love, who are parents to 17-year-old Stella del Carmen, released a statement in early June announcing their failed marriage. "We have thoughtfully and consensually decided to finalize our almost twenty years marriage in a loving and friendly manner honoring and respecting each other, our family and friends and the beautiful time we have spent together – Melanie & Antonio," it read.

According to new reports, Melanie submitted papers to the Los Angeles Superior Court demanding custody of Stella and the couple's three pet dogs, and spousal support for life. "She wants half of everything they jointly own," an insider told Daily Star. Melanie and Antonio, who met on the set of Two Much in 1995, own homes, restaurants and commercial buildings across Europe and the US. The pair have also spent years dedicated to philanthropic projects. "I think everybody who has done well out of life has to give something back," said New-York born Melanie. "We have to share and we have to help those who have nothing." In 2002 their dedication was recognised when the couple received the Stella Adler Angel Award for their extensive charity work.

Melanie was previously married to actor Don Johnson twice, and was with him when she met Antonio. She was also wed to actor Steven Bauer for five years.
