Nicole Kidman has opened up about how she is approaching her first Christmas without her father – who died suddenly in September after suffering a heart attack in a Singapore hotel room. The actress and mother-of-four said her family will be supporting each other this festive season, while clinic psychologist  Dr Antony Kidman will be notably absent.

"We've had some terrible things happen this year in our family," Nicole told Good Morning Britain. "We will be still holding tight to each other as that's all you can do at Christmas, hold tight to each other."

During the interview 47-year-old Nicole, who is currently promoting her new film Paddington, also spoke about how she keeps her marriage fresh.

"We work really hard to keep our relationship alive and to keep it incredibly deep and intimate," said Nicole of her eight-year marriage to musician Keith Urban. "That's from meeting in later life  and coming together at a particular time that was serendipitous.

"There's incredible possibility for love in the latter years," she added. "I sound like some old woman, a grandmother! Anyway it's good, I'm grateful."

Hawaii-born Nicole, who grew up in Australia and now lives in Nashville, also revealed a somewhat surprising domestic activity which she enjoys.

"I love washing clothes," she said. "Everyone's like 'are you joking?' I love watching the dirty water coming out, I sound do OCD but I love seeing them get clean."

While Nicole admitted a love of laundry, however, she said that there are some chores she's less keen on.

"I don't do the ironing," she said. "Even though as a kid that was my number one chore at home... I'm not a cook [either], I love to be cooked for but I'm not very good."
