Louis Tomlinson couldn't help but smile as he helped his baby son Freddie blow out the candle for his first birthday.

The One Direction band member wished his son a happy birthday on Sunday, tweeting: "Had a special day today with my birthday boy. Thanks for all the lovely messages!" while Freddie's mum Briana Jungwirth shared a sweet video of the baby boy, dressed in a cute shirt and trousers, toddling towards his cake with the help of Louis. She captioned the clip: "Special first birthday :)."

Well-wishers were quick to wish Louis and Briana's baby son many happy returns, with one writing: "Happy Birthday Freddie! The first year of motherhood is hard, congratulations Briana." Another added: "Happy Birthday to your little baby boy."

Louis has had a difficult time recently after his mother Johannah Deakin passed away in early December. The star performed on the X Factor just days after her death to pay tribute to her, and opened up about the emotional performance. "I have had to watch it back a couple of times since, because in the moment right there and especially with the emotion and everything, it all just wizzed by so quickly," he admitted.

"I was terrified at the time, but it was a real moment and it really helped me going out and having [collaborator] Steve [Aoki] there with me. It was my first performance, I wasn’t completely alone, so that definitely really helped."

He also spoke about her death on SiriusXM Radio, saying: "It's not something that I feel 100 per cent comfortable talking too much about, but just quickly, when I first found out the news I kind of did want to throw the towel in. But it was my mum who said to me that I've just got to keep going. She told me very sternly that she wanted me to."
