Waif-like supermodel Kate Moss was airlifted to hospital after being involved in a dramatic high-speed car crash on Thursday afternoon.

Britain’s highest-paid model was on her way to a photo shoot in Essex for Vogue magazine when the chauffeur-driven Range Rover in which she was a backseat passenger collided with another car travelling in the same direction. Both Kate’s vehicle and the other car, a Montego, ended up leaving the road and plunging down an embankment.

Although her driver managed to free himself, Kate, who complained of neck pain, was trapped in the wreckage. She was eventually cut free by firemen. Emergency medical representatives on the scene, suspecting spinal damage, strapped the shocked beauty to a spinal board before she was flown by air ambulance to Basildon Hospital in Essex.

There, it was discovered that her injuries were less serious than previously thought and were limited to a fractured shoulder and cuts and bruises. According to a spokeswoman for her agency, Storm Models, her face was not affected. “Originally they thought it a lot more serious. She hasn’t sustained any injuries to her face. As far as we are aware it’s bumps and bruises,” she said. Kate’s beau, editorial director and co-founder of Dazed & Confused magazine, Jefferson Hack rushed to be with his girlfriend who was discharged from hospital at 5:30pm.

The passengers in the other car, both aged 80, remained in hospital overnight, where the woman – the more seriously hurt of the couple – was being treated for neck and back injuries. The Range Rover, which the 27-year-old model bought after passing her driving test in May, suffered extensive damage and will have to be written off. Details of what caused the collision are still unknown.
