Fashion has always been a notoriously fickle business, with economic ups and downs combining with the unpredictable taste factor to create a roller coaster environment.

And Gucci Group creative director Tom Ford says he believes recent events will result in fashion becoming less ostentatious in approach and a general “unification of taste”. Although he emphasises that “fashion is a pendulum and had swung to something different long before September 11 – something more individual,” the designer predicts that “people will retreat from flamboyant fashion, and away from all things that scream.”

Speaking at the International Herald Tribune conference Fashion 2001: The Business And The Brand in Paris on Wednesday, before flying to Tokyo to present the Yves Saint Laurent Spring-Summer 2002 collection, Tom predicted that, “soon we will live in a global culture.” He went on to add: “Many find this sad, and you may be surprised that I am one of them.”
