JOHN GALLIANO AND CHRISTIAN LACROIX THRILL IN PARIS

Paris Fashion Week kicked off with colourful contrasts this week, with stunning collections from Christian Dior and Christian Lacroix. While Lacroix's beauties displayed the label's ready-to-wear pieces in a tranquil French garden, British-born designer John Galliano turned his runway show for Christian Dior into an East Asian-inspired extravaganza.

Galliano's collection seemed to be a more wearable version of his over-the-top couture creations, which were influenced by his recent trips to China and Japan. Models in Kabuki makeup sported, quilted jackets and flowing gowns, as well as layer upon layer of brightly-hued organza and chiffon. His unusual latex pieces, which dominated the first half of the presentation, inspired Dior fan Gwen Stefani to wonder bluntly: "Just how do I get my ass into that rubber skirt?"

Meanwhile, designer Christian Lacroix opted out of the usual catwalk carnival, selecting a flower-filled outdoor setting and his mood-lit showroom as the backdrop for his collection.

Like guests at Donatella Versace's haute couture display in January, fashionistas were able to get an up-close-and-personal view of the Lacroix creations – and it looks like the two designers may have started a trend. "I think this is a perfect way for (Lacroix) to show his clothes," said one admirer. "And so many people are realising that it makes sense."
