Although initially all eyes were on the ladies to see the long-awaited Oscar-night gowns and jewels, the men also drew plenty of admiring and assessing looks from fans and fashionistas alike, since several top Hollywood personalities were offering some interesting variations on the traditional tuxedo and black bow tie theme.

Johnny Depp, stepping well away from his ragged rogue look in Pirates Of The Caribbean, made a slick entrance in impeccable Giorgio Armani. But he is Johnny Depp after all, so his bow tie was tucked under the collar, and spikes of hair fell artistically over his eyes and down to those glorious chiselled cheekbones.

Tom Hanks and Jim Carrey (whose familiar floppy mop of hair has given way to a surprising close shave) were both sporting white neckties against the classic black jacket and white shirt, while Will Smith and best supporting actor winner Tim Robbins were among those who went for a black shirt under the tux to create a striking monochrome look.

Comedian and actor Robin Williams stood out in a knee-length straight-cut jacket when he presented the award for best animated feature film to Andrew Stanton for Finding Nemo. Another take on the traditional outfit was offered by veteran actor/director Clint Eastwood, who was looking sharp in a soft and shiny silver shirt. And singer Sting, who arrived with his daughter Eliot "Coco" Paulina, was simply romantic in a black satin cravat teamed with a stand-up collar.
