Cinema's most stylish dazzle on the red carpet at Oscars

While the attentions of movie fans were firmly fixed on the winners and losers inside the Kodak Theatre on Sunday night, many of the world's fashionistas were more interested in the style statements being made on the red carpet outside. And the silver screen's leading ladies didn't disappoint, with a host of stunning gowns on display as the big names made their way into the hotly anticipated prizegiving.

Strapless satin was a ubiquitous feature at this year's event, with A-list stars like Cameron Diaz opting to bring a little extra sheen to the proceedings. Jada Pinkett-Smith turned to Carolina Herrera for her corset-style gold lame creation, while Beyonce was looking just as ravishing in a pale green Armani number. Cate Blanchett's Swarovski crystal affair was also designed by the Italian maestro.

New York native Maggie Gyllenhaal went for a darker hue, with a midnight blue Proenza Schouler gown edged with feathers.

Another look finding favour with silver screen sirens this year was sheer fabrics gathered in soft, figure-hugging swathes that softly emphasised their curves. Kate Winslet, stunning in a draped Valentino affair, made the look all her own, as did Jennifer Lopez, who opted for an off-the-shoulder Marchesa design, and Jennifer Hudson, who had chosen Oscar de la Renta.

Gwyneth Paltrow stepped out in a similarly styled fish-tail Zac Posen gown in nude-hued tulle. And she wasn't the only one who opted for the flattering shade, as Penelope Cruz - who was accompanied by younger sister Monica - was equally dazzling in rosé Valentino.

Others beauties striking an especially eye-catching style note included Nicole Kidman. Photographed hand-in-hand with her old friend Naomi Watts, the Aussie actress was stunning in crimson Balenciaga. British favourite Helen Mirren, who scooped the best actress gong for her demure portrayal of the Queen, was turning heads, too, in champagne-coloured Christian Lacroix. "It chose me," she told reporters on the way into the bash. "It makes me feel comfortable."
