Marc Jacobs took style watchers on a trip back in time this week when he sent models down the New York runway in outfits which wouldn't have looked out of place in the Big Apple of the 1930s.

Among those creations which seemed to have stepped from the pages of F Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel Tender Is The Night were slim-fitting trouser suits in subtle hues, a scarlet trench coat and a mustard yellow sweater and skirt combo. The look, which Marc defines as 'grown up', explored the chic, elegant silhouette of an earlier era, accessorised with wide-brimmed hats and gloves.

"He's one of the most talented designers in the world right now," said British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman of Jacobs. "He knows what people want to wear before they do."

While black was predictably strong for the coming autumn/winter, several designers had also scattered their latest collection with brilliant hues, funky prints and sparkly embellishments, which glowed like bright jewels against a matt black background of opaque tights and sombre accessories.

Matthew Williamson's take on the trend included a complex-print, rainbow-hued dress, while Oscar de la Renta illuminated his predominately black collection with a hot pink number with cut-out detailing on the skirt. Meanwhile, Donna Karan explored the same 'scattered jewels' approach by adding short, fuschia pink and lime green dresses to her more familiarly sombre pieces.
