He left a Rolls Royce, similar to the one pictured, in a New York car park and forgot about it

Many absent-minded motorists have had the embarrassing experience of forgetting where they parked their car, but most manage to find it again before too long. The late Richard Harris forgot his Rolls-Royce completely, however, and left it sitting in a garage for 25 years.

His amazing oversight came to light after his widow was hit with a 329,000 parking bill. Apparently the legendary actor received the car as part of his payment for the film The Heroes Of Telemark in 1965. He parked the luxury automobile in a New York car park and subsequently forgot it existed.

The Rolls spent the next few decades racking up 250 a week in tariffs, which his widow has been asked to pay. In order to meet the costs, Elizabeth has decided to auction the vehicle at Christie's, where it is expected to fetch 143,000. "It's heartbreaking to have to let it go," she said. "But as his sole trustee I have to get his affairs in order."

Richard died last year at the age of 72 after receiving chemotherapy for Hodgkins disease. The iconic Irishman, who won a whole new generation of fans after playing Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series, was remembered last week at a memorial service in London's West End.
