There was a distinctly Celtic feel in downtown Manhattan on Tuesday night, as Ewan McGregor's new film Down With Love made its debut at the Tribeca film festival.

Before the screening of the comedy, the Scottish hunk had some help from U2 frontman Bono as they took part in a ceremony of remembrance in honour of those affected by the September 11 attacks. Later, the two stars joined Robert DeNiro and Ewan's Down With Love partner Renée Zellweger on the red carpet.

Speaking before the film debut, Bono said that movies set in the Big Apple had made him fall in love with the city. "It was the cultural power of New York that turned an Irishman like me living a long way away in Dublin into a fan," he said.

Also present at the event was Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who was eager to point out the contribution last year's festival made to New York in the wake of the September 11 attacks. The 2002 event attracted 150,000 people and contributed £6.5 million to the struggling local economy.

Highlights of the Tribeca festival will include a free concert in which Robbie Williams will duet with Norah Jones. And movie fans are also looking forward to the remake of Michael Caine's 1969 classic The Italian Job. The new movie, which will be premiered later this week, stars Edward Norton, Mark Wahlberg and Charlize Theron.
