SIGOURNEY WEAVES HER STARRY SPELL OVER SCOTS CAPITAL

16 AUGUST 2006

Sigourney Weaver had obviously decided a touch of tartan would be just the ticket for a series of appearances at the Edinburgh Film Festival. Arriving on the arm of Alan Rickman for the UK premiere of their film Snowcake, the statuesque New Yorker had the Scottish theme all tied up, sporting a funky red checked neckcloth to go with her crisp white shirt and black trousers.

Earlier in the day she rolled up to pick up a lifetime achievement award wearing a green kilted skirt. To mark the occasion her hosts presented the beaming two-time Oscar-nominee with a quaich, a traditional ceremonial drinking cup.

But that wasn't the end of the 56-year-old actress' sartorial tributes. At Reel Life - a gala evening focusing on the Alien star's long career - Sigourney, obviously delighted at the warm Scots welcome, wore a thistle on her lapel.

The actress is just the first of many big names expected at the event, now in its 60th year. Charlize Theron, Sean Connery - the festival's patron, and Ocean's Eleven director Steven Soderburgh, whose breakthrough film Sex, Lies, And Videotape was screened there 17 years ago, will also be jetting in.
