Gabriel supports fellow Irishmen Liam and Pierce

Irish eyes were smiling this week as three of Ireland's biggest screen talents met up in New York. Dublin-born Gabriel Byrne turned out to support Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan at a special screening of their Wild West film Seraphim Falls.

Northern Ireland native Liam had extra support in the form of wife Natasha Richardson, ultra-elegant in a sophisticated black dress, while Gabriel, who has just been signed on to play a therapist in new HBO series In Treatment, was accompanied by an attractive guest.

Back across the pond in the UK several newly announced Oscar nominees were catching up with their London fans on Tuesday. Leonardo DiCaprio and co-star Djimon Hounsou, who are shortlisted in the best actor and best supporting actor categories, attended the European premiere of their acclaimed film Blood Diamond in Leicester Square. The film has racked up five nominations in total, including best picture.

"We've kind of already celebrated," said 32-year-old Leo of the cast. "We've toasted each other and gave each other a group hug." The California-based actor seemed particularly impressed with the stamina of British fans, who lined up to see him in the bitter cold. And he rewarded them by spending 45 minutes chatting to wellwishers outside the cinema.

"It's pretty amazing for them to stand out there for ten minutes let alone hours, but it's a warm welcome," he said. Jennifer Connelly, who also stars in the movie about the African diamond industry, took to the red carpet alongside her London-born husband Paul Bettany. Her approach to keeping warm in the winter chill? Trendy cut-off leggings and a stylish black mac.
