It's been a year since Hollywood hunk Johnny Depp was last on the red carpet at a premiere – far too long for his many female admirers. So when the actor's black limousine delivered him to the screening of his new film Public Enemies in Chicago, they made sure they expressed their appreciation in no uncertain terms.

Over 600 people had gathered outside the theatre hoping to catch a glimpse of the sexy dad-of-two. And they weren't disappointed it seems, as shrieks of excitement split the air as the 46-year-old emerged from his limo displaying a longer hairdo, and wearing blue shades and a pinstripe three-piece.

Johnny joined co-stars Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard at the world premiere of their crime drama about real-life bank robber John Dillinger – played by Johnny - and the FBI's efforts to bring him to justice. Christian portrays Melvin Purvis, the agent who leads the hunt, while French beauty Marion is John's girlfriend Billie Frechette.

The American robber's dramatic tale ended in 1934 in Chicago, just four miles from the cinema where the premiere was held, and much of the film's action was shot in the city. "It's nice to be able to come back here and say 'Thank you', and this shindig is a way of doing it," Johnny told the assembled crowd.

Public Enemies, which also stars Channing Tatum, Stephen Dorff and Giovanni Ribisi, goes on general release in the UK on July 3, opening in the US two days earlier.
