It has been revealed that Zendaya will be playing the iconic role of Mary Jane Watson in the upcoming Marvel superhero film, Spider-Man: Homecoming. According to The Wrap, the Disney channel star will be portraying Peter Parker's main love interest in the film, a role that was most famously portrayed by Kristen Dunst in the original trilogy.
Although the 19-year-old's representatives have yet to confirm exactly what her role will be in the film after she was initially mysteriously cast as a character simply named 'Michelle,' fans of the star have taken to Twitter to praise the casting decision, with one joking: "Wow I really let Marvel fool me. Why did I actually think Zendaya was playing a 'Michelle' instead of Mary Jane or Gwen Stacy lol," while another wrote: "Zendaya is going to be Mary Jane. Spider-Man: Homecoming is shaping out to be one of Marvel's best."

Although Zendaya has yet to confirm she will in fact be playing Mary Jane, the star has opened up about her character's personality, saying: "I can say that she's very smart, very intellectual, always in her books. Kinda wierd... which we like. Which I like, personally. Always throwing one-liners at her friends. Always to herself, always."
The film, which is scheduled to be released in summer 2017, will see Tom Holland reprise his role from Captain America: Civil War as a teenage Peter Parker, who becomes Spider-Man after being bit by a radioactive spider, while Michael Keaton will be starring as the as-of-yet unrevealed antagonist.

Other cast members of the upcoming blockbuster include Robert Downey Jnr, who will reprising his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man for the eighth time, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, and The Martian actor Donald Glover.
