New First Lady Michelle's skin looked flawless at her husband's inauguration

Michelle Obama's appearance at her husband's inauguration garnered almost as many column inches as the president's speech. And it's no wonder, when the new First Lady's skin managed to look so smooth.

Michelle's make-up artist, Ingrid Grimes-Myles, has said the first step to ensuring your skin looks picture perfect is to drink plenty of water, always moisturise and use a sunscreen – even in winter - which, at minus-two degrees, it most definitely was in Washington.

And that's one factor we've never taken into account before…

Ingrid points out that in very cold weather, eyes get teary, so it's important to use a cream-based foundation, which will give great coverage to hide blemishes and dark circles. Then top with just a little powder that won't 'crack' and is easy to re-blend if it gets moist around the eyes and cheeks.

She also points out that while many women think their eyes are their most important feature, it's the brows that are the 'workhorse' of the face, giving definition, balance, structure and lift to the whole of the face.

Ingrid recommends that, if you're busy, just fill in the brows - you can always use a little brown eyeshadow - and then, when you have time, bring out the eyes with liner and lashes. She uses Jet Black Eye Definer by Bloom, £7.79 - available over here from Superdrug - to outline Michelle's eyes.

Ingrid advises Michelle to exfoliate her lips at night with a little sugar or a textured washcloth, with a hydrating cream and then a petroleum-based product - such as Vaseline - on top to lock in the moisture.

Michelle is a fan of MAC lip cosmetics – MAC Lipstick in Crème D'Nude, £10.77, from www.maccosmetics.co.uk, is perfect for First Lady lips.
