London-born Bruce Joseph Forsyth Johnson decided on a career in entertainment after watching Fred Astaire films at the age of eight. Like his idol, he trained in dance, making his TV debut in 1939, singing, dancing and playing the accordion on a talent show. After WWII, he toured the UK doing pantomimes, stage shows and circuses, before finding fame overnight in 1958 as the compere of TV variety show Sunday Night At The London Palladium. Since then he has fronted some of Britain's best-loved TV shows, including The Generation Game, The Price Is Right, Play Your Cards Right and Strictly Come Dancing. Bruce who was awarded an OBE in 2005 has been married three times. From 1953 to 1973 he was with Penny Calvert, with whom he had three daughters, then in 1973 he wed Generation Game hostess Anthea Redfern. After that ended in 1979, he was asked to judge the Miss World contest and fell in love with fellow judge and 1976 contest winner Wilnelia Merced. The pair tied the knot in 1983 and went on to have a son together.
