Actor
Born: August 6, 1963
Famous for: playing DS Ray Carling in Seventies cop series Life On Mars and spin-off Ashes To Ashes

The son of professional singers-turned publicans, Rotherham-raised Dean discovered he was similarly blessed in the vocals department when he became involved with a local choir in 1977. He went on to join an amateur operatic society, and landed his first lead role at just 16. When he turned 18 he swapped singing in his parents' pub for performing on cruise ships and at Butlins and Pontins during the holiday season. In 2000 director Ken Loach was looking for locals to appear in his film The Naviagators, among those chosen was Dean. Numerous TV appearances followed, including Wire In The Blood, No Angels, Between The Sheets and New Street Order, before he was cast alongside Philip Glenister and John Simm as DS Ray Carling in Seventies police drama Life On Mars and its equally successful Eighties-set sequel Ashes To Ashes
