Prince George

When it was announced in 2012 that Prince William, and Kate Middleton were expecting their first child the reaction was one of universal delight. On 22 July the following year, the Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to a little boy whom the couple named George Alexander Louis.

Named for the Queen's father and grandfather, His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge will eventually reign as King George VII of the United Kingdom and 15 other realms around the world.

His arrival at 4.24pm on a blistering hot day was celebrated with gun salutes in Green Park and the Tower of London, while the bells at Westminster Abbey rang for three hours continuously.

Just over 24 hours after his grand debut, the couple showed their little Prince off in a photocall outside St Mary's Hospital, London before whisking him off to the Middleton family home.

The King who will occupy the throne toward the end of the 21st century was to spend the first weeks of his life outside the walls of a palace, giving him the sort of excellent start that his mother herself had.

His permanent home will be Apartment 1A in Kensington Palace, the magnificent royal estate where William also grew up.

His father told the press that the little boy, who was due to be christened in autumn 2013, had a "good pair of lungs" and joked that "thankfully" he looked like Kate.
