DI’S FORMER BUTLER TEAMS UP WITH PR GURU

There are signs that Princess Diana’s butler, the man she called “my rock”, is considering writing a book about his years in her employ. Paul Burrell, who is charged with three counts of theft relating to items from Diana’s estate, has come to an agreement with public relations guru Max Clifford, the high-profile publicist with a reputation for masterminding “kiss and tell” revelations.

With the Old Bailey trial just three months away, Burrell has apparently told friends that he had been under “too much pressure” and had been “unable to cope” with the situation alone. Clifford, who was instrumental in the downfall of disgraced MP Jeffrey Archer, will now be handling all newspaper and book deals on the former royal employee’s behalf.

“I have been inundated with requests by the world’s media and also from people wanting to represent me,” Burrell explained. “But I wanted the best and it was arranged that I meet with Max Clifford. I am glad that he is now representing me.”

A book deal could be worth as much as £1 million to the 43-year-old son of a lorry driver, who has always said that he would never reveal details of his years with the Princess.

He and Clifford had been in discussions for a month, and finally reached an agreement last week. All earlier media deals entered into by the Princess’s one-time confidant have now been cancelled.
