17 JANUARY 2003
Prince Rainier was centre stage on Thursday night, as he attended the opening of the 2003 Monte-Carlo International Circus Festival at Monaco's Espace Fontvielle. The 79-year-old royal, whose illness kept him from participating in the principality's National Day celebrations for the first time in November, took a front row seat as he carried out his duties as jury member for the international competition.

Heir to the throne Prince Albert was seated alongside his father, who will help decide the winners of the three-ring competition, known as the circus equivalent of the Oscars. The sovereign is known for his expertise in the world of circus spectacles, and will be on hand to serve up the Gold, Silver and Bronze Clown Awards after 20 acts show their tricks and tumbles over the next eight days.

Princess Stephanie, who sported a broad smile as she took her place alongside brother Albert, is also something of a circus expert. Having recently ended a romantic relationship with elephant trainer Franco Knie – at one point she was immersed in circus life, living in a Swiss caravan with her entertainer beau – the 37-year-old princess will surely have some insightful opinions on the performances.

Now in its 27th year, the festival runs through January 23.
