CHARLES SPINS 'SPECIAL' LADY SONG

Prince Charles has been showing just how sweet he can be during a visit to the Lake District. First he helped out at a toffee-makers' shop, then he demonstrated his taste for romance during an appearance on a local Cumbria radio station.

Asked to request a song, the heir to the throne chose Peter Skeller's You're A Lady. The number one single was released in 1972, the year Charles first met his partner Camilla Parker Bowles.

It was a hit in the summer when the couple first fell in love and Charles admitted the disc remains "very special" to him. The pair's youthful romance was ill-fated, however, as the Prince was due to leave to serve in the Navy, and the song's melancholy lyrics may well have reflected his feelings all those years ago:

Now the evening has come to a close

And I've had my last dance with you

Unto the empty streets we go

And it might be my last chance with you

So I might as well get it over

The things I have to say

Won't wait until another day

The lovelorn Prince – then just 24 years old – was due to be at sea for eight months, but he would have to wait much longer to be reunited with Camilla who became engaged to someone else in his absence.
