The Queen has decided to throw a girls-only luncheon at Buckingham Palace, to celebrate the excellence of women in British society. The gathering, which will be the first ever female-only event at the Palace, will take place on March 11, three days after International Women's Day.

Harry Potter author JK Rowling has been invited, along with Cherie Blair, Heather Mills McCartney and Sixties model Twiggy.

"The Queen has been a working mother most of her adult life and thought this would be an appropriate way to celebrate women and recognise their achievements and contribution to British society," said a Palace spokesman. "It will be a day to pay tribute to women across a broad range who have achieved in all sorts of areas, many of whom have triumphed, often in the face of adversity."

In all there will be some 200 guests from the worlds of art, business, science, sport and charity. Her Majesty will also be joined by the Princess Royal, the Duchess of Gloucester and the Countess of Wessex, who will be attending her first official engagement since the birth of baby Louise.
