The former home of the late Queen Mother, Glamis Castle, has become the centre of a divorce dispute between its current residents, the Earl and Countess of Strathmore. The couple, who were married in 1984, separated last year after the Earl stated that the marriage had broken down irretrievably.
While the Earl moved out over the summer to “put some distance between himself and his wife”, the Countess, 41-year-old Isobel Bowes-Lyon, has continued to live in the castle and wants to remain in residence after the divorce.
The 17,000-acre estate, which is said to be worth £12 million, was the childhood home of the late royal matriarch and the place where she spent one of the her happiest periods of her life.
The Countess is currently seeking a court order to allow her to stay in the aristocratic seat for 12 years. Lawyers for her husband have requested that the action be brought forward as the Earl is in ill health and prolonging the case was likely to have an adverse effect on his condition. He is currently living in a lodge in County Durham.
